Today we finally made it to Yellowstone Park. I could spend ages trying to describe the scenery but wouldn’t be able to do it justice; The scale is as great as anything seen so far, the colours seem more vibrant and there is the added attraction of thermal activity so everywhere (well, lots of places) steam is shooting out of the ground.
The National Parks are very strict about protecting the environment and how to deal with wild animals. Rick has briefed us several times to drive the message home.
1. If you see a grizzly bear, get away as quickly as possible. He said we were unlikely to see one and didn’t want to.
2. If you see a brown bear, make yourself as big as possible and shout at it.
3. If anything attacks you, fight back by going for the nose and/or eyes.
WE SAW A GRIZZLY BEAR!!!!
We were walking along a trail to one of the many waterfalls when it just appeared about ten feet away from us. Rick said it was only a young one but I thought it big enough to consider us as food. My thought process was something like: bear, photo, GRIZZLY, RUN. We managed a dignified retreat. As well as this we saw elk and loads of bison so we’ve been very lucky.
Our journey took us round the northern loop so we were out all day. We stopped to take in the sunset at the porcelain geyser field. Another highlight!
Finally we made it to the campground and set up in the dark; a good job we are now a practised crew. Eventually food was served and we all had an early night. However, not before all food items and personal hygiene items were stowed back in the trailer as a precaution against bears, who do ’visit’ the campsite at night.
